Ahrefs Domain Rating (DR) is a metric developed by Ahrefs that measures the overall strength of a website’s backlink profile on a scale of 0 to 100. The higher the number, the stronger the domain’s link authority relative to every other website in the Ahrefs index.
It is important to understand what DR is and what it is not. DR measures backlink strength only. It is not a measure of content quality, traffic, or how well a site ranks. A site can have a DR of 70 and barely any organic traffic if its content is poor. Conversely, a newer site with a DR of 20 can rank well for low competition keywords with strong content.
How Is It Calculated?
Ahrefs calculates DR based on three things. How many unique domains link to your site, how much DR those linking domains have themselves, and how many other sites those linking domains are also pointing to. A link from a site that links to thousands of other websites passes less authority than a link from a site that links to very few.
The scale is logarithmic, not linear. Moving from DR 10 to DR 20 is relatively easy. Moving from DR 60 to DR 70 requires significantly more effort because you are competing with a much stronger pool of websites at that level.
Is DR a Google Ranking Factor?
No. DR is an Ahrefs proprietary metric and Google does not use it. Google has its own internal way of evaluating domain authority which it has never made public. DR is useful as a benchmarking tool to compare your site against competitors and evaluate the quality of potential link building opportunities, but it should not be confused with how Google itself measures authority.
How to Use DR Practically
When evaluating a site for a guest post or backlink opportunity, DR gives you a quick signal of whether that site has a strong link profile worth pursuing. Generally, a higher DR site will pass more authority through a backlink. But relevance always matters more than raw DR. A DR 40 site in your exact niche will almost always be a better link than a DR 70 site with no topical connection to what you do.
